Air Conditioning FAQs

Answers to the questions we're asked most about air conditioning for homes and businesses.

How much does air conditioning cost to run?

Modern inverter systems are very efficient. A typical single-room wall-mounted unit often costs somewhere in the region of 10p–20p an hour to run once the room is at temperature, depending on the unit, the room and your electricity tariff. Do I need planning permission for an outdoor unit?

Often not for a typical house, but it depends on where the unit goes, its size, noise, and whether your home is listed or in a conservation area. Flats usually need landlord or freeholder permission. Read our guide: Do I need planning permission for air conditioning?

Can air conditioning heat my home as well as cool it?

Yes. Most modern split systems work as an air-to-air heat pump, so the same unit can cool in summer and heat in winter. In heating mode they typically produce several units of heat for every unit of electricity used, which makes them far more efficient than plug-in electric heaters.

How long does installation take?

A single wall-mounted system is usually installed in a day. Multi-room systems can take longer depending on the number of indoor units and pipe runs. We'll give you a clear timescale with your quote.

Will installation make a mess?

We keep disruption to a minimum. Most installs need a small hole through the wall for the pipework, and we route pipes and cables as neatly as possible, often in trunking. We tidy up before we leave.

How noisy is air conditioning?

Modern indoor units are designed to be quiet – on low settings many are barely noticeable, which makes them suitable for bedrooms. We'll recommend units and positions that keep noise to a minimum for you and your neighbours.

How often should air conditioning be serviced?

We recommend a service at least once a year. Regular servicing keeps the system efficient, improves air quality and is often required to keep the manufacturer's warranty valid. Find out about our servicing.

Are your engineers F-Gas certified?

Yes. Working with refrigerant gases legally requires F-Gas certification, and all our installation, servicing and repair work is carried out by F-Gas certified engineers.
